November 9, 2004 – Move over Anna Kournikova. A new tennis icon has emerged. Seventeen-year-old Russian phenomenon Maria Sharapova catapulted to fame when she won Wimbledon earlier this year. Yesterday, Canon announced a multi-year deal with Sharapova that will include global advertising, retail promotions and events.

"Maria Sharapova’s combination of style and substance is a natural fit for Canon," said Debra Epstein, vice president and general manager of corporate communications at Canon U.S.A. "Her powerful game and approachable personality represent a perfect match for the Canon brand, and we are thrilled about the partnership."

The tennis player, ranked seventh in the world right now, will promote not only Canon’s line of digital cameras, but office products too. A few weeks ago, Canon began its "New Day" advertising campaign to show consumers how easy and manageable their lives can be with Canon products. Sharapova will build on this campaign, showing consumers how easy it is to capture and share her global experiences with her family and friends with Canon products.

"I really enjoy being ahead of the latest trends in fashion and technology, and I’m excited to be working with Canon," said Sharapova. "Technology plays such a big part in all aspects of my life, and the Canon relationship is a natural one for me."
