November 12, 2004* — At a time when most digital camera manufacturers are netting losses from lower prices, Nikon has done the opposite by tripling its profits in the first half of the fiscal year. The company credits their earnings to increasing demand for both digital cameras and chip manufacturing equipment. The Nikon D70 is apparently selling quite well, despite tough competition within the prosumer digital SLR market. Nikon is also vending equipment that makes chips to power liquid crystal displays, which are popular now. Last year during this time, Nikon earned about $19 million. This year, net income reached $74 million. Last year, 56 percent of revenue was generated from imaging products and 30.9 percent was made from precision equipment.
