Sony HDR-UX20 First Impressions Camcorder Review

The HDR-UX20 is Sony’s top of the line DVD camcorder this year. Capturing in the AVCHD format at an improved 1920 x 1080 resolution, the UX20 is outfitted with both an 8GB of internal flash memory and a MemoryStick PRO Duo card slot, both of which can store HD video. The Sony HDR-UX20 is also significantly slimmed down and weighs less than last year’s Sony HDR-UX7.

Canon HF10 First Impressions Camcorder Review

The Canon Vixia HF10 is the solid state camcorder in Canon’s current high definition consumer lineup, recording to removable SDHC memory cards and a non-removable 16GB internal flash memory. The HF10 shares a similar imaging system as the HG10 (recording to hard disk drive) and the HR10 (recording to DVD). All three of these camcorders record and output in the AVCHD video format.

Sony HDR-SR12 First Impressions Camcorder Review

The Sony HDR-SR12 is Sony’s highest end high definition hard drive (HDD) camcorder for 2008. It has an incredible capacity of 120GB. The step-down HDR-SR11 is identical in all respects save the smaller, 60GB HDD. That increased storage takes on new importance, however, as Sony has upped video capture to a full 1920 x 1280 at 16Mbps. The HDR-SR12 also sports Sony’s newest images sensor, a 1/3.15-inch CMOS chip with Exmor technology.

Panasonic HDC-SD9 First Impressions Camcorder Review

The HDC-SD9 is Panasonic’s third generation of memory card-based AVCHD camcorders, even though the first generation HDC-SD1 was announced only 13 months ago. In the interim, the form factor has changed little – these things are tiny. In fact, the HDC-SD9 is currently the world’s smallest “full HD” (1920 x 1080) camcorder. Under the hood, Panasonic has made some improvements and some deletions. In addition to “full HD” status, the HDC-SD9 can shoot in 24P mode. It also has a new face detection system and an “Intelligent Shooting Guide” that points out problematic shots. And it’s small. Very, very, small. Unfortunately, it lost the mic and headphone jack that kept the HDC-SD1 and SD5 off of our “naughty” list. Does the HDC-SD9 measure up?
