PowerShot D10 Highlights
Take this camera anywhere: waterproof, cold resistant and shockproof
Life can take you almost anywhere. So Canon engineered a digital camera durable enough to go where you go and produce the kind of awe-inspiring images that will earn your respect. It’s the PowerShot D10 and it's no ordinary digital camera. This unique camera is waterproof down to 33 feet so you can take it scuba diving, snorkeling or surfing. It’s freeze proof and can withstand extremes of temperature from 14-104 degrees (F) so it’s also ideal for snowboarding, mountaineering and more. Plus, it’s shockproof to 4 feet, so when the going gets rough, the D10 will keep going strong.
Unique accessories available such as customized straps and interchangeable faceplates
You’re always up for any challenge. So Canon designed the PowerShot D10 with a selection of versatile accessories (sold separately) that enable you to outfit the camera to meet the requirements of your next adventure. The customized strap is a perfect choice for those who want to have their camera within easy reach, yet keep their hands free. The Canon faceplates let you distinctively mark the camera as belonging to you alone. The carabiner hook offers you a handy way to securely suspend the D10 from a belt, backpack or diving harness.
A World of Advantages with Canon’s Technology
DIGIC 4 Image Processor has evolved Face Detection Technology that tracks the faces of moving subjects and lets the shooter enter the frame seamlessly with the Face Detection Self-Timer.
DIGIC 4 Image Processor
Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, delivers evolved Face Detection Technology that keeps every face in every photo looking its very best. The technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus. In addition, exposure, flash and white balance are compensated, so that faces exhibit natural skin tones and backgrounds are properly exposed.
iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 image processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include the photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, specify Face Detection Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range--allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing.
Intelligent Contrast Correction
DIGIC 4 also makes possible the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The PowerShot D10 can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.
Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
2) The PowerShot D10 can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.
Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the PowerShot D10 features ISO 1600 setting that reduces the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.
12.1 megapixels, plus 3x optical zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilizer
With the PowerShot D10, dramatic, personal pictures have never been easier to shoot and share. This 12.1-megapixel camera lets you create impressively large photos of family and friends you’ll be proud to display. The high-resolution images taken by the D10 can be enlarged up to 13 x 19 inches.
The PowerShot D10 has a 3x optical zoom that gives you the power to shoot distant subjects with razor-sharp precision and stunning lifelike color.
The PowerShot D10 is equipped with Canon’s acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects camera shake--one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you’ll be proud to shoot and share. And Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is so convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash.
Blink Detection
Nothing ruins a great picture more than having your subjects’ eyes closed. That’s why the PowerShot D10 is equipped with Blink Detection. If closed eyes are detected, a "blink warning" icon appears for 3 seconds, allowing you to retake the shot before your subject or subjects move on. Blink Detection provides you with extra assurance when capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments like planting the flag at the summit of the mountain.
Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper settings
Just set the Canon PowerShot D10 to Smart AUTO and you’re ready for maximum enjoyment from your picture taking every time. It’s a relaxing and satisfying way to shoot because you can completely concentrate on your subject knowing that the camera has the technical details covered. Advanced Canon technology intelligently analyzes your situation and shooting conditions. Then it automatically selects an appropriate setting from 18 specially defined settings. So whether you’re photographing flowers, a captivating sunset, or your friends at the park, you can be confident that you’re getting dramatic, memorable images.
Shooting Modes
Advanced presets for the best possible photos under certain conditions. With 19 Shooting Modes including 16 Special Scene Modes, you’re ready for whatever shot comes your way

We took a number of pictures underwater, mostly snorkeling on the surface. In pretty bright sunlight we were able to get good pictures of barracuda that were at 10 feet below us. Color was at least as good as what you are actually seeing, especially if you use the Underwater color setting. The controls are very easy to use and make reasonably intuitive sense. Colors on reef fish and sponges are representative of real life. At one point we went scuba diving in a cave and got it down to about 20 feet. Pictures came out blurry but that wasn't the camera's fault. We were trying to take pictures of a moving small shrimp. One thing to keep in mind is that when you are snorkeling/swimming you are not being completely still while you are taking the pictures.
Also, the camera takes great pictures out of the water. I was very happy with the regular quality. It has a good combination of automatic and manual modes that allow you to over/underexpose picutres, change the light settings, and it also has manual focus capability.
One thing I like is that the connector for the strap is actually a button that can be locked onto anyone of the four corners of the camera. This allows you to move it around to fit the situation. I would highly recommend a floating strap. We got the one from Olympus and it will float the camera. It also makes it easier to find and gives you a sense of comfort that you won't lose it.
Good:
1. The camera actually is waterproof, at least down to 30 feet.
2. Picture quality is very good, both in and out of water.
3. Good combination of manual and automatic modes.
4. Battery life appears good. I was able to get at least two full days of picture taking out of one charge. I never ran the battery all the way down so I don't know what total life is.
Could be better:
1. I agree with the reviewer that threads for filters would be useful. There are some filters designed for underwater photography to bring out color that would be nice to use.
2. Uses a propretary battery and charger. Although the battery seems to last a long time you have to make sure you have the correct charger with you. Not a huge deal unless you leave it. Also means you can't run into the drug store for more batteries if you get low.
3. Screen sometimes difficult to see underwater. This can be an issue if you are trying to get a picture of a specific moving fish. If they are not really bright and easy to see you may have trouble getting them centered the way you like.
4. Because of the design of the housing (which is a little bulky) you may have to work to find a case that fits.
Bad:
1. Nothing.
All in all I am very happy with this camera and recommend it highly. Even the things I would like to change are not really that big a deal.
Knowing that I would be going on a trip to Mexico, I knew water activities would be included so naturally I thought it was important to purchase a camera for those times. I had 5 days until trip take-off, so it was hard taking the time to find the "right one". With about 2 hours of searching I stumbled upon a few that I thought would suit me well. I paid for the 2 day shipping and got it right on time, ran out to the store to get the SD card while the battery charged. The first few pics were amazing so I knew this camera wouldn't fail me. Scared for the let down (per several other reviews), I did not test it in water first, in fact my fiance threw it in the swimming pool about an hour after arriving to our resort!!!! Screaming I went in after the camera... everything was just fine with it! The seals are solid, in fact at times hard to open the compartments, but would take that considering it's protectint it from water. I did also by the yellow CHUMS wrist float, which also held up incredibly well, in the ocean & pool the camera did not sink to the bottom thanks to that floatation device. The thing I wish I would have known is that for water proof cameras there is a solution to help keep the water from fogging up the lens & screen. It allows the water to bead up and roll off the screens. A friend told us in that pinch that spitting, YES, SPITTING on the lens and screen, rub the salive around then re-submerge in whatever water you are in would help. Sure enough, it did! Of course you have to do it a few times during your trip if you are in water a lot but it worked!!!
The camera was submerged the majority of the 8 days there, in swimming pools, hot tubs and the ocean, amazingly there were no issues, it held up great throughout the whole thing. One downfall was the battery (granted a day and a half of constant video taking and photographing is not bad) but I was devastated that it died while we were out whale watching, and it was about 15 minutes after we found the whales!
We laughed all the time about people screaming that their cameras or cells phone were getting wet in the various activities, since that was the last thing we had to worry about. I had two cameras with me and after the second day I quit switching back and forth between dry and wet activities cause the CANON far superceeded my expectations, even when taking noraml dry land photos. I forgot this this was a 12megapix camera so of course the photos were clear, bright and outstanding!
It is no SLR but who would want to spend that kind of money for a camera that can't get wet on the spot, we still have our nice camera for professional looking photos, but it's not something we want to risk breaking, losing or damaging while on vacation, not to mention it's sheer size! This canon is portable, compact and goes anywhere and everywhere with you esp on those fun family trips! In hind sight I would have paid $500-600 on this thing for the quality and durability. We did drop it about 10 feet, on accident, but it never skipped a beat. This little thing is a gem!
At first I was in agreement with others who said that it does lag between picture taking, but for those times when you want it to go faster you can change it to take more, even continuously by just pressing and holding the shutter button! Highly satisfactory!
If you are still concerned, I wouldn't be. Even if something happens to the camera (drops and doesn't work or water damage) there is a factory warrenty and from prior experience with Canon they honor their warrenties, and fast.
Hope this helps others of you!! Great purchase.

The only thing that I found is not user-friendly is the panoramic tool. For panoramics, you have to put the pictures together on the computer, which is time consuing. I just use my smart phone and the apps for panoramic pictures.
UPDATE: July 14, 2014
I brought this camera to Cuba in April, 2014, and after three years (I purchsed this in 2011) of land and underwater use, the view screen is fogging up with condensation and I'm unable to see or focus on subjects in or out of the water. After a few hours out of the water, the screen clears. I've been taking great care of this camera, including rinsing and soaking in fresh water each time I use it. Looks like I'll only be able to use this as a land camera now, which is a shame 'cause I love this camera.
Searching for a new underwater camera - thinking of purchasing the upgraded version, but now I'm a little hesitent due to view screen condensation.
I have read some reviews the door (which one?) is loose and it might leak water. My doors are solid and tight. Can't move them a micrometer. Very tight seal. But I haven't tried the waterproof part yet. Bought it for my Riviera Maya trip this summer. I guess I could test it here in my bathtub...
Cons: As other readers have said...THE SHAPE AND FEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT USE THIS CAMERA WITHOUT THE WRIST STRAP! Or you WILL test out it's shock proof feature. It feels so slipery and the shape is very awkward to hold. In my opinion the surface of this camera should have some type of anti-slip material like some other point and shoots have. If you can find some sort of skin case for it, try it and let us know. The shape is weird to hold. Feels bulky. BUT! It's a VERY small defect in my opinion, so as to rate this 99.5/100. Just use your wrist strap. Use the floating one when in water.
When I purchased this camera Amazon offered a free accessory set for free (original price $30) which included a carry case (quite handy) which attaches to your belt loops, a floating strap, and some other thing. In my opinion this set/kit should be included with the camera originally. Maybe the D-20 does...?
