*January 25, 2006 – *Apple has changed their minds on the pricing for upgrades of their Pro software lines to "Universal" versions, which are compatible with both Intel and PowerPC Mac computers.
Among the Apple Pro applications affected are Aperture, which will not support Intel-based Macs even with Rosetta, Apple’s Intel compatibility software. Originally, owners of Aperture were going to be forced to pay $49 for what Apple referred to as a "crossgrade," a software upgrade to the Universal version. Apple’s Aperture software page, however, now states, "New and existing owners of Aperture will be able to crossgrade to the Universal version at no additional charge via Software Update." The Rosetta software page on the Apple site also indicates that current "Aperture owners can crossgrade at no charge."
The Universal version of Pro applications, including Aperture, will be available for download on March 31st. Other Pro applications still effected by the Intel change are Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Studio, Logic Pro and Logic Express. According to Apple’s website, existing owners of those applications will still be charged for crossgrades.
