Bright LEICA DC Lens – F2.8-4.0 25-400mmThe new LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens is created especially for the DMC-FZ1000. It has an F2.8-4.0 brightness that resists blurring even with telephoto shots, and an angle of view that extends from 25mm wide-angle to 16x optical zoom*. Comprising 15 elements in 11 groups, including 4 ED lenses and 5 aspherical lenses with 8 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit achieves high MTF value. Adoption of 5 aspherical glass lenses achieves beautiful, evenly smooth defocus with invisible edge line, which is made possible by Panasonic’s unique aspherical lens mold technology. * 35mm camera equivalent: 25-400mm. |
Light Speed AF with LUMIX DFD Focus TechnologyA new linear motor integrated into the focus system achieves approx. 275% faster1 focusing, compared to the conventional DMC-FZ200. In addition new DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology2 shortens the time to set the focus. It instantaneously calculates the distance to the subject by evaluating 2 images with different sharpness levels. As a result, ultra high-speed AF of approx. 0.09 sec3 (wide-end) / approx. 0.171,4 sec (tele-end) is achieved. |
5-AXIS Correction / Tilt CorrectionThe HYBRID O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) + with 5-axis correction* gives you blur-less, one-handed video shooting ability. It detects and compensates for the camera's 5 types of movement – horizontal, vertical, axis of rotation, vertical rotation and horizontal rotation. The Level Shot Function* detects the image's horizontal line and maintains it even if the camera is tilted. It takes stable video even in high-angle, blind recording. *HYBRID O.I.S.+ and Level Shot Function do not work in 4K video recording. |

== By far the most important thing that makes me like this camera is the viewfinder, with a large and bright display that provides WYSYWIG when in automatic mode (i.e. what you see is what you get). It is a gianl improvement over LCD monitors, both flip-out and on the back of the camera, for several reasons:
First and foremost, I can see with significantly greater clarity through the viewfinder than on an LCD monitor. And... very very crucial .... photography is all about seeing.
Second, I find that when I use the viewfinder, the camera is easier to control, because when it is pressed up against my face, my fingers are much closer to the camera than when I am using an LCD monitor. Unlike with an LCD monitor, my fingers are in a constant orientation with respect to the camera, which helps me to better access the controls without having to look at them.
Third, I find it easier and faster to navigate menus and to change settings like F-stop and ISO and shutter speed when the camera is pressed against my face.
Fourth, very very important, it's easier to take photos outdoors with your eye pressed against the viewfinder excluding extraneous light than it is with an LCD monitor, especially under bright sun..
Before closing my comments about the viewfinder versus the flip out LCD monitor, I should note that the flip out on the FZ1000 is nice and flexible -- and remains very useful under certain circumstances -- if you want to shoot from low down in a situation where you don't want to bend, or high up if you are in a crowd or need to see over some other obstacle. But most of the time these days I find myself shooting from the viewfinder, because I can see so much better..
== Excellent performance in indoor photography
I originally got this cam because I wanted to take pictures indoors under normal levels of artificial light with ultra rapid focus and exposure control. By "normal levels of artificial light" I mean no light coming in from windows, no special artificial lighting, and no flash. Just the amount of light you would get in a normally lit windowless office or in a living room at night time or in a furniture showroom.
This cam is very good at doing this when it is in automatic mode, yielding amazingly good hand held pix in poor light, at incredibly low shutter speeds like a quarter of a second, without a tripod, because of superlatively strong image stabilization, and this happens even at substantial zooms like 200mm. Any camera without image stabilization would be showing huge amounts of blur and shake. And I should add that color balance in low artificial light is good, when in automatic mode.
With candid pictures of people under normal living room lighting at night time, the FZ1000 usually does surprisingly well in automatic mode. I was enormously surprised to find that with exposure of one quarter second, most pictures of most people come out quite well, because with most people, there is much less movement than I expected to find - except when the person is speaking or eating.
As might be expected, under low light the FZ1000 in automatic mode does not do well in capturing rapidly moving people or other objects. But setting a high shutter speed and a high ISO value this camera copes quite well. It's true that high ISO's make photos more grainy, but in pictures of people it's the expression that counts, IMHO.
In this regard, shooting in low light, the FZ1000 and FZ200 are about equivalent.
== Crisp controls that are not mushy or muddy.
== The camera is the result of a collaboration between Leica and Panasonic, and has nearly identical hardware to a Leica V-Lux Type 114 that costs a lot more, though the software is different.
== High capacity zoom lens immensely improve the ability to take good pictures, because one can often get closeups of subjects that would be hard or impossible to get close to, and because one has much more flexibility in determining what to include and what to exclude from the picture. On the FZ1000 the 400mm optical zoom magnifies images to eight times a normal 50mm lens and with digital zoom to 1600mm you can get 32 times normal magnification. Picture quality is excellent up to 400, and in my opinion remains quite good at 800mm when there's plenty of light.
== Fast focusing and fast determination of exposure settings and almost zero shutter lag, which allows the capturing of fleeting events.
== In my opinion feels solid and well built.
== Allows me to display live images on a Panasonic Viera TV set via HDMI cable. I don't know whether it will do this on other TVs. This is really helpful for portraits where you want the subject to be able to see their image on a TV screen so that they can adjust their expression.
CONS
== This camera is a bit of a power hog. If you want to shoot a lot of footage Take several spare batteries with you . I think it gets worse when image stabilization is switched on.
== In SCN mode there are far too many presets that differ only by tiny amounts. And one very valuable preset that was in the FZ200 has been deleted, namely the "Through glass" preset, that improved images taken through glass windows.
CONCLUSIONS
This camera is very flexible and takes excellent pictures in automatic mode in a huge variety of situations. Some folks sneer about "point and shoot" automation, but I really like a well designed automatic mode because it allows me to concentrate on the content of the picture rather than worrying about settings, and lets me grab shots that I would otherwise miss. I think that about 9 times out of 10, automatic mode on this camera does a better job than I would do if I spent time fiddling in manual mode.
P.S. I attach a hand held photo of the moon taken with maximum extended zoom of 3200 mm, leaning against a car for the hand held shot. This shot demonstrates the incredibly good image stabilization offered by the FZ1000. This image has had no postprocessing and is not cropped.
To achieve maximum zoom, I set Program mode, electronic zoom enabled, picture size of 5MB (and not the 20MB option).
I got the camera a few days before leaving for the world's largest RC Helicopter event in Muncie, Indiana. It is an international event that lasts 4-5 days and brings in well over a thousand pilots. I used the FZ1000 exclusively for video and stills. I am in the process now of posting photos and videos of the event on various websites and forums. I previously used the FZ200 for it's convenience. It shoots adequate video but the stills are very limited. The FZ1000 is in another league compared to its little brother. The sensor is about 4 times larger and you can certainly tell. With the FZ200 I usually shot video in MP4 at 30fps. If I wanted to shoot at 60fps I had to shoot in AVCHD which is more difficult to work with. With the FZ1000 I can shoot 1080p at 60fps in MP4. The video looks dramatically better than what I was getting from the FZ200. I have shot a little 4K video but I don't currently have any way to watch video at that resolution so until that changes I will reserve my opinion on that. The helicopter video that I shot at this is event looks awesome. I did not experiment a lot with settings but have no complaints. It did very well even in low light situations. This is a great video camera. Period. I have not explored shooting in 4K and pulling 8mp stills from the video. That has a lot of potential for what I do with the RC hobby.
I shot thousands of stills at the event. Many were macro shots of new products and such. Those turned out very nicely. The vast
majority were on mostly auto settings with ISO of 125. I also shot a lot of action photos of helicopters in aerobatic flight using burst mode. Generally this worked very well and it did not slow down much until 40-50 frames had been shot. Perfect for what I am using it for. IQ was good in good light. Obviously in low light the 1inch sensor cannot compare to a full frame DSLR or even APS-C or four thirds cameras. However I got very useable images in low light. Yes they were noisy but useable for my purposes. The flash is good with more reach than the one on the FZ200. I used it primarily as a fill-in and did not experiment much with it. Compared to most point and shoot cameras this has noticeable depth of field and decent bokeh. The autofocus is really fast and accurate. The manual focus is good considering that the ring is not actually connected to the lens using a fly by wire system.
The electronic viewfinder is good. Much, much better than others I have used. The articulating screen is a bit small but very useful. The camera is not small. Much larger and heavier than the FZ200. I carried it everywhere for 5 days and it wasn't bad. It uses the same battery as the FZ200. This is good because I have two spares already. The downside is that battery life is not nearly as good. I found that leaving the screen off helped greatly. With that turned off the difference between the FZ1000 and FZ200 was not significant.
I owned a Panasonic FZ50 back in use day and loved it. I have told anyone that would listen that what I was hoping for someday was that camera with a larger sensor and quality video. I hate having to carry multiple cameras and lenses. With the FZ1000 I put a spare battery in my pocket and that is it. The lens works for 99% of the situations that I face. A larger sensor would have meant a larger and heavier camera. I think that in general Panasonic nailed it with this one. For the first time ever I have one camera that can shoot really high quality video and nice stills in one package. I have not even begun to explore all of the features of this camera. For someone like me who is moving up from an FZ200 this is an awesome camera. I could not be happier. Is it perfect? No but considering the balance between sensor size and length of lens and, of course, cost I think Panasonic got this one right. For me this is the holy grail of cameras.

The CONS are:
1. Heavy and bulky in comparison to other cameras,
2. The automatic exposure control is not the best and forces you to manually adjust exposure when the sun is too bright (e.g. at noon) or when there is not enough light (e.g. overcast days).
3. It takes a lot of time to fully learn how to control the camera and its multiple adjustments. Too many options make it difficult to set it up easily.
Having said that, I love it and totally recommend it to anyone who would like to have a travel camera that takes stunning pictures and excellent videos without the need of post processing (please see attached picture).

This wonderful Lumiz FZ1000 is sure a gem at the price I paid at $579 Cdn. Images are also comparable, or even better in some conditions, than my Nikon D90 and J1. The decent stabilized zoom comes in handy too.

For a bridge camera, it has far outstripped the crowd in wow, features and portability. I think this camera easily would rate among the very top, cream of the crop bridge cameras on the market today. Oddly, I think I must have ripped off the sellers at $1000 for this item.
